Malang, 2024 – The Center of Excellence (COE) Corporate Law School program at Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) continues to innovate legal education by offering a course in Consumer Protection Law. This program, organized by the Islamic Family Law Study Program at the Faculty of Islamic Studies UMM in collaboration with the Indonesian Advocates Association (PERADI) Malang, aims to strengthen students' competencies in understanding and applying consumer protection law in both national and international contexts.

Students enrolled in this program are in their sixth semester during the Even Semester of the 2023/2024 Academic Year. The theoretical lectures for the Consumer Protection Law course are taught by Mr. Nanang Nilson, S.H., M.H., a legal practitioner who also serves as the Chairman of the Indonesian National Consumer Protection Agency. With his practical experience and strategic position, he brings rich and applicable insights into the classroom.

Throughout the program, students study the basic concepts of consumer protection law and various regulations that apply both nationally and internationally. They are taught to analyze cases related to consumer rights, understand the common issues consumers face, and develop skills in resolving consumer disputes through mediation, arbitration, or litigation. The teaching method used is hybrid, combining face-to-face (offline) sessions and online meetings, providing flexibility for students in attending lectures.

The significance of this program lies in its goal to produce graduates who not only understand the theory of consumer protection law but also possess the practical skills needed in the workforce. Students are trained to analyze legal cases and resolve disputes with effective and efficient approaches. This is crucial to prepare them for the various legal challenges they may face in their future careers.

In addition to the legal aspects, students also study ethics in consumer protection, which includes applying ethical principles in daily practices. They are equipped with knowledge about social responsibility and how to maintain consumer trust in various business situations. The integration of Islamic legal principles in consumer protection law analysis provides an additional perspective, enriching students' understanding of justice and ethics in the context of consumer law.

Students are also given the opportunity to intern at prominent companies or legal institutions. This allows them to apply the theoretical knowledge they have learned in real-world contexts. During their internships, students not only learn about the practical aspects of consumer protection law but also develop soft skills such as communication, leadership, and teamwork. These skills are vital for success in a career in consumer law, where effective communication and teamwork are integral to professionalism.

The learning outcomes for the Consumer Protection Law course in this program are comprehensive. Students are expected to master the basic concepts of consumer protection law and business regulations both nationally and internationally. They are also expected to analyze legal cases related to consumer rights and possess skills in resolving disputes through various methods.

This program also emphasizes the importance of understanding consumer protection regulations in different countries, allowing students to develop a global perspective in addressing consumer issues. They are taught to recognize the differences and similarities in international regulations and how to apply this knowledge in local contexts.

The success of this program is largely attributed to the active role of Mr. Nanang Nilson, S.H., M.H. As the Chairman of the Indonesian National Consumer Protection Agency, he brings highly relevant practical experience into the classroom. Students gain direct insights from a practitioner who has handled numerous consumer protection cases in Indonesia, making the material more engaging and applicable.

Moreover, the collaboration with PERADI Malang provides significant added value. Students have the opportunity to interact with professional advocates, receive career guidance and advice, and develop a professional network that will be beneficial in their future careers. Interactions with these professionals also help students understand industry expectations and better prepare themselves for entering the workforce.

The implementation of this program also involves various innovative teaching methods. The combination of face-to-face and online sessions allows for flexibility in the teaching and learning process, as well as utilizing technology to enhance the quality of education. Students can access lecture materials, discussions, and assignments online, enabling them to learn more effectively and efficiently.

The Center of Excellence Corporate Law School program with its focus on Consumer Protection Law demonstrates Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang's commitment to producing graduates who are ready to compete both nationally and internationally.
