Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) continues to demonstrate its commitment to enhancing the quality of legal education in Indonesia through the launch of the flagship program "Center of Excellence Corporate Law School". This program, organized by the Islamic Family Law Study Program under the Faculty of Islamic Studies, in collaboration with the Indonesian Advocates Association (PERADI) Malang, aims to produce corporate law experts who are not only competent in national and international legal aspects but also deeply understand business ethics and Islamic legal principles.
This innovative program is designed to meet the need for corporate law professionals with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills relevant to global industry demands. Students participating in this program will gain an in-depth understanding of fundamental corporate law concepts, business regulations, and critical aspects such as contracts, competition law, intellectual property rights (IPR), and corporate responsibility.
A key component of this program is the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) course, taught in the sixth semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. Delivered in a hybrid format, combining offline and online learning methods, this course offers maximum flexibility and accessibility for students. Notably, the course is taught by two lecturers with complementary backgrounds: Dr. Tinuk Dwi Cahyani, SH., S.HI., M.Hum., Ph.D., a practitioner lecturer, and Luciana Anggraeni, S.Sy., M.H., an internal lecturer. This collaboration ensures that students receive a balanced perspective between academic theory and practical field experience.
The learning outcomes for the IPR course are ambitious and comprehensive. Upon completing this course, students are expected to have an in-depth understanding of the fundamental concepts of IPR, including its various types, principles of protection, and relevance in the context of globalization. They will be capable of analyzing IPR legislation in Indonesia, such as laws governing copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets. Moreover, students will understand the rights and obligations of IPR owners and the processes involved in obtaining, maintaining, and protecting these rights.
The course places a strong emphasis on practical aspects. Students will be trained to analyze IPR infringement cases and formulate appropriate legal solutions. They will also learn to draft essential IPR-related documents, such as registration applications, licensing agreements, and infringement lawsuits. The ability to apply IPR knowledge in various business, artistic, technological, and creative industry contexts is also a primary focus.
The Center of Excellence Corporate Law School program goes beyond technical legal aspects, emphasizing the development of soft skills crucial for legal professionals. Students are trained in effective communication, both oral and written, regarding IPR matters with various stakeholders. Additionally, the program aims to develop critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and professional ethics in the application of IPR knowledge.
One unique feature of the program is its integration of Islamic legal principles into corporate law analysis. This approach provides a unique and relevant perspective, particularly in Indonesia, the country with the largest Muslim population in the world. Students learn how to harmonize modern corporate legal principles with Islamic values, creating a holistic and ethical approach to business law practice.
To provide valuable practical experience, the program also offers internship opportunities at leading companies or legal institutions. Through these internships, students can apply their theoretical knowledge from the classroom to real-world workplace situations. This experience not only strengthens their understanding of corporate law but also helps develop soft skills such as communication, leadership, and teamwork, which are essential for success in a corporate law career.
The Center of Excellence Corporate Law School program also pays special attention to contemporary business issues. Students will study concepts such as corporate social responsibility (CSR) and sustainability principles, which are increasingly significant in the global business landscape. Understanding these issues prepares students to become legal professionals who are not only technically proficient but also socially and environmentally aware.
In terms of dispute resolution, the program provides comprehensive training on various conflict resolution methods, including mediation, arbitration, and litigation. These skills are crucial given the complexity of modern business disputes, which often require flexible and diverse approaches.
The collaboration between UMM and PERADI Malang in organizing this program is a strategic step that adds significant value. PERADI, as a leading organization of advocates in Indonesia, brings practical experience and a broad professional network. This collaboration ensures that the program curriculum remains relevant to industry needs and current legal practices.
The hybrid learning approach implemented in this program reflects an adaptation to modern educational trends and current global conditions. By combining face-to-face and online learning methods, the program provides students with the flexibility to access learning materials and interact with lecturers and peers both physically and virtually. This approach also prepares students to work in increasingly digital and globally connected environments.
The establishment of the Center of Excellence Corporate Law School at UMM responds to the growing demand for corporate law professionals in Indonesia. With economic growth and the complexity of the business landscape, the need for legal experts who understand the nuances of corporate law in both national and international contexts is becoming increasingly critical. This program aims to fill that gap by producing graduates ready to face legal challenges in the globalization era.
Furthermore, the program contributes to Indonesia's efforts to enhance global competitiveness in the legal services sector. By equipping students with internationally relevant knowledge and skills, the program prepares them to compete in the global market and potentially attract foreign investment to Indonesia through improved business law services.
The Center of Excellence Corporate Law School, organized by UMM in collaboration with PERADI Malang, represents an innovative and visionary step in legal education in Indonesia. With its focus on corporate law and IPR, integration of Islamic legal principles, development of soft skills, and modern learning approaches, the program offers a holistic and relevant legal education. This initiative will not only produce technically competent legal professionals but also ethical, globally aware individuals ready to tackle the complex challenges of modern legal and business environments. Thus, the program holds great potential to shape the future of the legal profession in Indonesia and contribute to national economic development through improved business law services.
